Chapter 12

Leo

Exhaustion washed over me, but I didn't let the smile fall down off my face for even a second. Business dinners were a massive part of what I did. I had to keep potential new clients happy even if that involved staying out too late and drinking a little too much. But this would be worth it, it felt like a real sure-fire thing. The sort of dinner I didn't mind giving up part of my weekend for.

"Well, I will definitely be in touch with you," the corporate manager I'd been wooing tonight, Alex Webber, declared. "I think we can do great things, me and you."

I took his hand and shook it warmly. "It's been great to spend time with you, Alex. I hope that we get more time to do this in the future."

We exchanged a bit of mundane small talk now that all the heavy stuff was over, before it was time to go our separate ways at last. As I watched Alex get driven away in what might as well have been a limo for the damn size of it, I thought about heading back to my place and sleeping this night off. I'd been tired for hours after all. Yet as shattered as I was, my brain was annoyingly wired. I didn't think I was quite ready to turn in for the night. Not just yet anyway.

"Just one drink," I reasoned with myself. "That'll take the edge off."

There was only one place I would go. There wasn't anywhere else where I felt like I could just chill out and have a drink or two to clear my head.

And right now, there were a lot of thoughts circling around in my head. There had been ever since Juliet and I finally kissed at the office, just to have her running for the hills afterwards yet again. What was with that? It was so annoying. I would have much preferred her to stick around so we could at least talk about how she was feeling. Then we could come up with a solution that pleased both of us.

The running away left me empty and the both of us confused. So confused that instead of planning business strategy after a very important meeting with Alex Webber, I was instead wondering what Monday with Juliet was going to be like.

Crazy. The woman had seriously gotten under my skin. I needed a drink.

The bar was so busy I was immediately struck with curiosity. I came here quite a bit and the last time it was this packed it was... wait, was this another single's night? Oh God, that was the last thing I needed. Since I'd attempted to flirt with and kiss other women to get Juliet out my system and it never worked, the last thing I wanted was to give off the impression that I was up for it tonight.

But then, I also couldn't be bothered to go anywhere else. This was it for me.

I was only going to be here for a drink or two anyway, so I supposed it didn't matter.
